We visited Dr. Standard for our pre-op today and Christopher had some X-rays to see if anything had changed. After meeting with the doctor, we received the news that we are good to go for surgery tomorrow. We are on a deadline because this procedure can only be performed 6 – 8 weeks after the onset of Perthes. We are on week 7.
We have a unique opportunity and hope for tomorrow. Dr. Standard will harvest some of Christopher’s bone marrow and separate the bone marrow from the blood and plasma in a special centrifuge. He called it the ‘Ju-Ju’ juice. He will inject this back into Christopher’s dead hip bone. Regrowth can occur in as little as one week. ONE WEEK. We’ll be the third Perthes patient to receive this special procedure. If this works in the right hip, we’ll come back to do the same for the left. Unbelievable! When we visited Dr. Standard in February, he was researching this new procedure. He has already had success with it — our friend Tyler had it three weeks ago with an external fixator. Tyler’s hip looks amazing on the X-rays. So, we have surgery tomorrow, probably in the afternoon. We have three cases before us and Christopher’s procedure will take a couple of hours. He’ll have the core decompression with botox injections to increase his range of motion in both hips. We’ll arrive at Sinai Hospital at 9:00 am tomorrow.
Other things – we visited Tanner in the hospital today. He was having a rough day. Christopher just wanted to see his new friend and try to cheer him up. I was proud that he wasn’t thinking about his surgery tomorrow but concerned for others instead. 🙂 Then we met other kids at the HP house. We met Tyler (who had the ju-ju juice), he’s going home tomorrow. Then we met Bailey and she played ping-pong with Christopher. I’m sure we’ll make new friends tomorrow, but we are so thankful for those we have already met along the way.
