Looking Back

It’s hard to believe that almost a year ago, Christopher’s Journey really began. We all thought that within a year’s time this nightmare would be over. One person told me Perthes was a ‘long haul’ and they were not kidding. On December 30, 2010, our local pediatric orthopedic surgeon admitted he was wrong and Christopher did have Legg Calve Perthes Disease. It was also the last time we saw him. He wanted us to ‘wait’ five months and return to ‘see’ what happened. In those five months, we joined a Facebook support group for Legg Calve Perthes Disease, found Dr. Standard, discovered we had bi-lateral perthes, had two bone marrow transplants – one in each hip, started physical & swimming therapy and started the road to recovery. If we had waited on the other Dr. – we would have been in the same place we were – a complete collapsed femoral head on the left and possibly another collapse on the right. Christopher would have been in a wheelchair for a long time. Instead, God graced us with bone regrowth on the left hip (within six weeks) and a right hip that is frozen in time. We still have a long road to travel to complete bone regrowth but at least we are on our way.

Also looking back, we have watched our son grow wiser beyond his years. He has always been compassionate and loving but others are seeing him mature.  Family members that hadn’t seen him in a while were surprised by his maturity.

We recently told Christopher’s story in the Katy Magazine.  They didn’t completely get it right.  I said ‘Christopher was our walking miracle’ not Dr. Standard’s but at least his story is told.  They also make it sound like he is healed and I wished that were true.  Maybe next year…

Here’s to a pain free year for all of our Perthes friends and a very Happy New Year!
